TE PUNA WHAKARĀKEI:
JEWELLERY AS STATEMENT
In the face of socio-political and planetary collapse, an exhibition on jewellery seems inconsequential – after all, what is jewellery besides frivolous embellishment?
However, when released from the confines of beauty or ornamentation, jewellery can be appreciated for being a powerful mobile site of expression - a framework harnessed by artists to probe identity, politics and our relationship to communities and environment.
Te Puna Whakarākei: Jewellery as Statement positions jewellery in dialogue with concerns it has long engaged, yet is rarely credited for.
